The University of Klagenfurt was established in 1971.

The Uni Klagenfurt started off as a College of Educational Studies. Since October 2004 the official German name is Alpen-Adria Universität Klagenfurt. The reason for the change of the name was to stress the intercultural connections between the regions of the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. The English title for the Uni Klagenfurt leaves out the cognomen Alpen-Adria. In the year 2004 the Uni Klagenfurt hosted about 7.000 students and 400 academic staff and teachers.

The Uni is located close to the Lake Wörthersee on a wonderful campus.

Compared to other universities in Austria the Uni Klagenfirt is rather small and relatively unpopular. Most of the Austrian students tend either to stay at home to study or go to the big cities of Vienna and Graz.
